日漸增加高齡人口是大多數已開發國家面臨的真實情況。這種人口上的改變持續發生而且速度越來越快。全球60歲及以上人口的比例增長速度超過任何其他年齡。從1970年到2025年，預計老年人增加約6.94億或223％。到2025年，60歲以上的人口總數將達到12億左右。2050年，將有20億老年人口，其中80％生活在發展中國家。
