Sarah DeMola & Emily Quade: My ETA TEFL Training Experience

Sarah DeMola and Emily Quade work within the ETA advisory team which provides training and advice to the English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) and Taiwan local English teachers (LETs). Through weekly reports, bi-weekly workshops, class observations, and annual ETA conference, the team provides agile response and thorough training to enhance teaching quality of ETAs and LETs. Sarah DeMola and Emily Quade both hold M.A. degree from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and were both grantees of the “FSE English Teacher Training & Research Awards.”

Laurie Battle: Mathematical Modeling in Ecology

Laurie Battle is a professor of mathematics at Montana Tech specializing in mathematical modeling. She is a Fulbright Senior Scholar at National Chung Hsin University in Taichung, where she researches endangered Formosan landlocked salmon and teaches graduate courses on different modeling techniques. In 2014-2015 Dr. Battle were using simulation modeling to predict the effect of dam removal, a strategy for habitat restoration, on the abundance of salmon in the Chichiawan basin.

Marilyn Rahilly: Affective and Cultural Considerations in English Language Learning

Dr. Marilyn Rahilly conducted a qualitative study of a group of Taiwanese university students and examined the role that the affective domain and culture play in second language learning in adult learners of English, including: motivation, cultural differences, language anxiety, saving face, fear of making errors, public speaking, and risk-taking behavior among university students learning English as a second language. Dr. Marilyn Rahilly is an Assistant Professor of ESL, George Mason University. In the year of 2014-2015 she worked as a Fulbright Scholar at National Taiwan Normal University.

Kirsten Asdal: Naval Perspectives on Asia-Pacific Maritime Conflict

Kirsten shared her experiences living and studying in Taipei in 2013-2014 and discussed what she has learned about Asia-Pacific international relations and regional maritime conflict. Kirsten Asdal graduated from the US Naval Academy in May 2013 with a B.S. in Chinese. She will complete a masters in Contemporary Chinese Studies at Oxford University in 2015, then report to her first ship, the USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG112), to serve as a division officer.

Indro is an Associate Professor of Finance at Penn State University’s Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies. He received his MBA and Ph.D. in Finance from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington. Chiung-yao Ho: Does cross-cultural co-teaching work?

The Fulbright Taiwan is dedicated to the English co-teaching model and to improve the English literacy in Taiwan more than eleven years. On this journey, every English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) devoted their effort and energy to broaden the impact of the ETA program, so as the TEFL Professors, who provide professional training and counseling. As the TEFL professor of the year, Dr. Chiung-yao Ho has hold 25 workshops in Yilan, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Kinmen for 33 ETAs and more than 70 local English teachers. After one year of observation and research, Dr. Ho answers the question “Does cross-cultural co-teaching work?” with tremendous confidence.   英語教師訓練之我見:傅爾布萊特系列講座     把英文學好,不止能提升學生的競爭力,也是替生命開一扇窗。台灣傅爾布萊特在英語協同教學領域耕耘了十一個年頭。過程中,除了每位英語協同教師的活力與努力之外,英語教學顧問與其帶領的培訓課程也功不可沒。何瓊瑤教授在台灣十個月的時間主持了25場工作坊,協助分布於宜蘭、台中、高雄、金門等33位美籍英語協同教師與70多位台灣籍本地教師提升他們的英語教學。在何教授駐台的一年之中,她反覆自問如何讓跨文化協同教學方法更有效,經過一年多的資料蒐集與分析後,她最後得到了令人滿意的答案。     何瓊瑤博士任教於美國德州休士頓孤星學院希費校區,專長於英語為第二語言的教學。她同時為Cambridge CELTA (劍橋成人英語語言教學) 培訓認證講師。何教授在英語為第二語言的教學這個領域已有超過15年的教學經驗,並於TESOL及NAFSA等國際年會發表。

A Dynamic Dialogue

Six Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) Leah Apple, Elizabeth Matthews, Catherine Purdy, Christina Adelakun, Karissa Moy, and Nia Spooner found DANCING is the answer. Yilin Sun: Building knowledge in a co-teaching setting

     Dr. Yilin Sun provided training and advice for the American English teachers in the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program 2011-12. In this video, she shares her experiences in the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) field. During her time in Taiwan, she developed a case study book to expand the resources for ETAs. The book summarized 30 scenarios that ETAs may encounter during their teaching in Taiwan. The case book is also an important milestone celebrating the 10th year of the Fulbright English co-teaching program in Taiwan. In addition to her work with the ETA program, Yilin also served as a Visiting Professor in the English Dept of National Taiwan Normal University. She gave seminars to faculty and students and also taught a graduate course. Back in the United States, Dr. Sun is a full time professor at South Seattle Community College. 英語協同教學的知識建構     孫以琳教授於2011-2012年獲得獎助來台提供”傅爾布萊特英語協同教學計劃”專­業的英語教學建議。訪台期間她不只分享了她擅長的TESOL教法(英語做為第二種語言­),並完成了”台灣英語協同教學案例 (Voices of Taiwan)”,內含30個實用的協同教學案例,供未來參與計畫的老師參考。這本書­的出版,也為進入到第十年的傅爾布萊特英語協同教學計畫提供了一個重要的里程碑。
