Andrew Paulsen: Implementing Eastern Pedagogical Approaches to Teaching Math in Urban High Schools

Paulsen received Fulbright ‘Distinguished Awards in Teaching’ Scholar to research eastern mathematics pedagogy. Conducting most of his research on hundreds of classroom observations throughout Taiwan. Including Taiwanese teaching techniques, education policy, and culture, and offered recommendations on how to implement these ideas in urban schools throughout the United States. Andrew Paulsen is currently the Lead Math Teacher and an Instruction Coach at East Side High School, the largest comprehensive high school in Newark, New Jersey. Originally from Levittown, New York, Andrew received his B.A. from Marist College, his Master is in educational leadership, management, & policy from Seton Hall University, and his Ed.M. in public school leadership from Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Candace Chou: Implementing Digital Equity Initiatives in Remote Areas in Taiwan

Dr. Candace Chou’s Fulbright project is about the promotion of educational equity in Taiwan. She focus on the promises, challenges, and long-term impacts of the former e-tutees who joined the MOE’s E-tutor program. Dr. Candace Chou is an associate professor of learning technologies at the School of Education at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. She teaches courses on instructional design, online/blended/mobile learning, use of technology for instruction, and research methods. Her research interests include online interaction, learning environment design, and digital equity.

Marcia Lei Zeng: Applying Semantic Web Technologies to Digital Humanities

Dr. Zeng created a prototype platform which can encode structured data and transfer online bios for search engines access. The platform re-used resources of the Center for Digital Culture in Academia Sinica to allow renowned Taiwanese artists to be better known by the English speaking world.Marcia Lei Zeng is a Professor of Library and Information Science at Kent State University where she was named a University Outstanding Scholar and Researcher in 2014. She received several Federal research grants, authored 90+ research papers and five books, and gave 200+ conference presentations worldwide, including keynote speeches and invited lectures.

James Behuniak: American and Chinese Philosophy in Taiwan

Dr. James Behuniak reflected on teaching Philosophies in a comparative context, and shared some insights about living in Taiwan.  Dr. James Behuniak is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. His areas of research are American Philosophy and pre-Qin Chinese philosophy. Currently, he is Senior Fulbright Scholar teaching in the Philosophy department at National Taiwan University.

Sarah DeMola & Emily Quade: My ETA TEFL Training Experience

Sarah DeMola and Emily Quade work within the ETA advisory team which provides training and advice to the English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) and Taiwan local English teachers (LETs). Through weekly reports, bi-weekly workshops, class observations, and annual ETA conference, the team provides agile response and thorough training to enhance teaching quality of ETAs and LETs. Sarah DeMola and Emily Quade both hold M.A. degree from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and were both grantees of the “FSE English Teacher Training & Research Awards.”

Laurie Battle: Mathematical Modeling in Ecology

Laurie Battle is a professor of mathematics at Montana Tech specializing in mathematical modeling. She is a Fulbright Senior Scholar at National Chung Hsin University in Taichung, where she researches endangered Formosan landlocked salmon and teaches graduate courses on different modeling techniques. In 2014-2015 Dr. Battle were using simulation modeling to predict the effect of dam removal, a strategy for habitat restoration, on the abundance of salmon in the Chichiawan basin.
