Rodney Winther: Conducting My Way Through Taiwan (Music… not Trains!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHrJD6ZD2Fc    Professor Rodney Winther shared his conducting and teaching life at Shih Chien University, with the Taiwan Wind Ensemble, and through musical outreach in this video. At Shih Chien, he conducts the University Orchestra, the University Wind Ensemble and teaches graduate conducting. Professor Winther is retired from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he is Professor Emeritus of Music. Philip Brown: Dam(ned) Imperialism: The Case of the Wusantou Dam

    Dr. Philip Brown examines an unusual Japanese colonial enterprise that has been remembered not as the epitome of imperialistic evil, but in highly laudatory terms, especially since democratization in Taiwan. He was exploring the development of the Jianan water control project constructed between 1920 and 1930 under Japanese colonial rule and the ways it has been remembered in Taiwan over the years since its completion.     Dr. Philip Brown is Professor of Japanese and East Asian History at The Ohio State University. He is a 2013-2014 Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Institute of Taiwan History at the Academia Sinica. “壩”氣帝國主義? 嘉南大圳水利工程的建設與回憶     日本殖民統治台灣時期所建設的水利工程不但受到實行民主制度後的台灣高度讚賞,而且不被認為是邪惡帝國主義下的建設。菲力浦教授於此影片討論於1920年到1930年間,台灣在日本政府殖民統治下,所建造完成的嘉南大圳水利工程,與其特殊的歷史意義。     菲力浦博士為俄亥俄州立大學日本與東亞歷史系之教授。他是2013-2014傅爾布萊特獎學金的獲獎學者,於中央研究院台灣史研究所進行相關研究。

Benjamin Brose: Xuanzang’s Skull

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVuwUTwAJQI    Dr. Benjamin Brose discusses some of the ways Buddhist relics have been employed by modern political regimes to evoke patriotic sentiments at home and to establish diplomatic and economic alliances abroad. He is currently conducting research on modern representations of the Tang monk, pilgrim, and scholar Xuanzang (600?-664).    Benjamin Brose received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2009 and is now Assistant Professor of Chinese Buddhism at the University of Michigan.   玄奘頂骨-當代亞洲的佛教和民族主義以及外交 – 傅爾布萊特系列講座     這場講座由傅爾布萊特訪問學者本博澤博士將討論佛教文物如何被現代政權作為喚醒愛國意識、確立外交地位與促成海外經濟聯盟的手段。    本博澤博士為美國密西根大學宗教學研究所助理教授,他於2009年獲得美國史丹佛大學博士學位。他目前專注於研究當代對於一個虔誠朝聖者-唐僧玄奘大師(600?-664)之表述詮釋。

Robert Anthony Siegel: An American Novelist in Taiwan

He is the author of two novels, All the Money in the World and All Will Be Revealed. His awards include O. Henry and Pushcart Prizes, and fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Michener/Copernicus Society and the Fine Arts Work Center at Provincetown. Why Fulbright Works for America?

    The Fulbright Program began after WWII and is the oldest, most prestigious large-scale exchange scholarship program supported by the U.S. and partner counties. The ROC was a founding partner, and the Program has jointly supported over 3,000 academic leaders, teachers, researchers, and leadership elites. In 2014-2015, 47 Taiwanese and 87 American scholars, student, and teachers participated. Many of the American Fulbright scholars and students shared their views on Fulbright Program’s effort to make “a world with a little more knowledge and a little less conflict.”

Teagan Adamson: Build knowledge to save lives

學友連結計畫: 專訪邱正雄董事長 Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund – Distinguished Alumnus: Paul Chiu

    Among the outstanding Fulbright Alumni, Paul Chiu, the fifth and sixth Alumni Board Chair of the Taiwan Fulbright Alumni Association, is well-known. He served as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of China, the Minister of Finance, Vice Premier of Executive Yuan, Associate Professor and later, Adjunct Professor of National Taiwan University of Economics and Honorary Chairman of Entie Commercial Bank. Now he is the Chairman of Bank SinoPac. He was publicly honored as “the world’s best Finance Minister in 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis” by former President, Lee Teng-hui.      There are three parts of this video. First is an introduction of Fulbright Taiwan Program and the Taiwan Fulbright Alumni Association. Second is an introduction of Paul Chiu’s life story and his success. Kurt Stallmann: Discovering the stories through “Sounds of Taipei”

The sounds of scooters, the voices selling in the night markets, the bell in the temples, every sound has profound meanings which shape a city’s identity.     Dr. Kurt Stallmann, an artist/professor from Rice University, sponsored by Fulbright scholarship, devotes himself to breaking the boundary between sounds and music. Dr. Stallmann collects and analyzes the unique identity of Taipei’s sounds and collaborates with the Taiwan Music Institute and several Taiwanese musicians to tell stories about the “Sounds of Taipei.” 台北的聲音:傅爾布萊特系列講座     城市中無處不在而卻常被忽略的聲音,聲音藝術家卻總能聽出不同的端倪。機車聲,夜市叫­賣聲,寺廟的鐘聲,每一種環境聲都有其背後的意涵,而每一座城市都有其獨特的聲音個性­。來自萊斯大學的史特丞教授暨藝術家透過傅爾布萊特獎學金的贊助,致力于打破聲音與音­樂之間的界限。他與台灣傳統藝術中心音樂館及多位台灣音樂家合作,透過蒐集與分析臺北­獨特的聲音個性,記錄了一個又一個的臺北聲音故事。     史特承博士同時身兼作曲家、表演者、即興演奏家等角色並時常跨領域與不同的藝術家合作。他不只擅長於樂器演奏同時也使用科技音樂與環境聲音進行創作。史特承博士現任美國萊斯大學薛弗音樂學院電子音樂中心主任及副教授。

Amber Kao: Dance to strengthen my roots

     Through dancing, Amber Kao tackles the ethnicity and identity issue she deals with every day. Dance brought her to her parent’s homeland and she has learned a whole new choreographic language with the master Lin Hwai-min and the Cloud Gate Theatre Dance Company. As a Fulbright fellow, Amber has also actively participated in performances around Taiwan sharing her passion for arts with the elementary students.     透過舞蹈,高恩倍致力於詮釋她常需面對的種族身分議題。也是經由舞蹈,她重新踏上台灣的土地,向林懷民老師與雲門舞集一同學習全新的語言。身為傅爾布萊特青年學人,在練舞、表演之餘,高恩倍也積極前往中小學演出,將她對藝術的熱情與台灣學生分享。
