Teagan Adamson: Build knowledge to save lives

Teagan Adamson received her M.S. in Biomedical Engineering in 2013 from Arizona State University with a focus in biosensors and nanotechnology for disease applications. As a dual Fulbright-Whitaker Fellow at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences, she is working to engineer new molecules capable of improving current breast cancer treatment. 艾婷安在2013年於亞利桑那州立大學獲得生物醫學工程的碩士學位,她主要研究生物傳­感器和奈米技術在疾病上的應用。她不但獲得本年度的傅爾布萊特獎學金,同時也是惠特克­生物醫學工程獎學金的獲獎學者,其目前在中央研究院生物醫學研究所,致力於研究改善目­前乳癌治療的新分子。

Chiung-yao Ho: Does cross-cultural co-teaching work?

    To learn English well is not only critical to increase students’ capacity to compete, but also to open doors for them. The Fulbright Taiwan is dedicated to the English co-teaching model and to improve the English literacy in Taiwan more than eleven years. On this journey, every English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) devoted their effort and energy to broaden the impact of the ETA program, so as the TEFL Professors, who provide professional training and counseling. As the TEFL professor of the year, Dr. Chiung-yao Ho has hold 25 workshops in Yilan, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Kinmen for 33 ETAs and more than 70 local English teachers. After one year of observation and research, Dr. Ho answers the question “Does cross-cultural co-teaching work?” with tremendous confidence.   英語教師訓練之我見:傅爾布萊特系列講座     把英文學好,不止能提升學生的競爭力,也是替生命開一扇窗。台灣傅爾布萊特在英語協同教學領域耕耘了十一個年頭。過程中,除了每位英語協同教師的活力與努力之外,英語教學顧問與其帶領的培訓課程也功不可沒。何瓊瑤教授在台灣十個月的時間主持了25場工作坊,協助分布於宜蘭、台中、高雄、金門等33位美籍英語協同教師與70多位台灣籍本地教師提升他們的英語教學。在何教授駐台的一年之中,她反覆自問如何讓跨文化協同教學方法更有效,經過一年多的資料蒐集與分析後,她最後得到了令人滿意的答案。     何瓊瑤博士任教於美國德州休士頓孤星學院希費校區,專長於英語為第二語言的教學。她同時為Cambridge CELTA (劍橋成人英語語言教學) 培訓認證講師。何教授在英語為第二語言的教學這個領域已有超過15年的教學經驗,並於TESOL及NAFSA等國際年會發表。

Kurt Stallmann: Discovering the stories through “Sounds of Taipei”

    Sounds in the city are everywhere but can be easily ignored. However, they are very dynamic and precious for sound artists. The sounds of scooters, the voices selling in the night markets, the bell in the temples, every sound has profound meanings which shape a city’s identity.     Dr. Kurt Stallmann, an artist/professor from Rice University, sponsored by Fulbright scholarship, devotes himself to breaking the boundary between sounds and music. Dr. Stallmann collects and analyzes the unique identity of Taipei’s sounds and collaborates with the Taiwan Music Institute and several Taiwanese musicians to tell stories about the “Sounds of Taipei.” 台北的聲音:傅爾布萊特系列講座     城市中無處不在而卻常被忽略的聲音,聲音藝術家卻總能聽出不同的端倪。機車聲,夜市叫­賣聲,寺廟的鐘聲,每一種環境聲都有其背後的意涵,而每一座城市都有其獨特的聲音個性­。來自萊斯大學的史特丞教授暨藝術家透過傅爾布萊特獎學金的贊助,致力于打破聲音與音­樂之間的界限。他與台灣傳統藝術中心音樂館及多位台灣音樂家合作,透過蒐集與分析臺北­獨特的聲音個性,記錄了一個又一個的臺北聲音故事。     史特承博士同時身兼作曲家、表演者、即興演奏家等角色並時常跨領域與不同的藝術家合作。他不只擅長於樂器演奏同時也使用科技音樂與環境聲音進行創作。史特承博士現任美國萊斯大學薛弗音樂學院電子音樂中心主任及副教授。

Amber Kao: Dance to strengthen my roots

     Through dancing, Amber Kao tackles the ethnicity and identity issue she deals with every day. Dance brought her to her parent’s homeland and she has learned a whole new choreographic language with the master Lin Hwai-min and the Cloud Gate Theatre Dance Company. As a Fulbright fellow, Amber has also actively participated in performances around Taiwan sharing her passion for arts with the elementary students.     透過舞蹈,高恩倍致力於詮釋她常需面對的種族身分議題。也是經由舞蹈,她重新踏上台灣的土地,向林懷民老師與雲門舞集一同學習全新的語言。身為傅爾布萊特青年學人,在練舞、表演之餘,高恩倍也積極前往中小學演出,將她對藝術的熱情與台灣學生分享。

Barbara Foster: Printmaking in the age of digital everything

    With the rapid evolution of digital technology, digital printing has become an indispensable commercial and artistic tool. However, due to the popularity and low-cost of the printing tools, will the art and artists of printmaking become extinct? Can the print-making art mingle with the other forms of contemporary arts to create a new medium? Barbara Foster, a professor from the San Francisco State University guides fine art students at the National Taiwan Normal University to break boundaries and explore this interdisciplinary realm. 融合古代和當代科技跨越一直的空間:共同來場藝術印刷的探索冒險     在數位科技的蓬勃發展的今日,數位印刷已成為日常中不可或缺的工具 。然而,隨著數位印刷的普及與低廉的價格,流傳已久的印刷技術與藝術是否能繼續與其他各種新型式的藝術結合,在當代藝術當中占有一席之地?來自美國舊金山州立大學的方艾莫教授將帶領台灣師範大學藝術系繪畫組的學生一同打破各種限制,一起探索這個跨領域的新境界。     方艾莫女士為舊金山州立大學藝術系教授,其透過產學合作致力於混合印刷製程技術的創新,且為該業界公認的專家。方教授目前以傅爾布萊特獎學金資深學者的身分在國立台灣師範大學美術學系擔任客座教授,講授透過文化和素材來研究後數位版畫。

Simon Levin: Finding the new possibilities of local clay

    As an artist, one of Simon Levin‘s passions is a search for cultural identity. He believes indigenous clay is a metaphor for the malleable foundation upon which we respond to the world. Simon’s Fulbright journey has lead him to dig, process, test and explore the properties of domestic clay in the U.S. and Taiwan, re-introducing materials and local potential to the Taiwanese academic studio environment. 賽烈文(Simon Levin)陶藝個展:異相凝合     陶藝家賽烈文擅長運用傳統柴燒工藝與陶土釉藥實驗創作色彩斑斕的陶藝品。賽老師希望透過創作打破外來與本地陶土的貴賤高低之別,重新發現台灣陶土的可能性。他將分享他對本地陶土、文化以及台灣創作環境的觀察。     賽烈文先生是2012-2013傅爾布萊特資深學者,目前為台南藝術大學訪問學者。

Brian Bruya: Apply comparative philosophy on the contemporary issues

    Eastern and Western philosophy have distinguished heritages and are both are valuable cultural assets. However, today’s philosophical training in the West tends to neglect the value of Eastern philosophical approaches to contemporary issues. Dr. Brian Bruya noticed this trend and suggests both eastern and western approaches need to be considered in order to attack contemporary social and moral issues. Professor Bruya lectured in two graduate seminars, “American Pragmatism” and “Comparative Moral Psychology,” to share his insights on comparative philosophy in the National Taiwan University. He also shares his experience living in Taiwan.  毫不費力(無為):傅爾布萊特系列講座     我們常形容一人不費吹灰之力完成一件困難的任務。但是當我們試著把人類行為中所謂的“毫不費力”概念化,就沒這麼容易了。這次的講座柏嘯虎教授就要從哲學、行為心理學與認知科學的角度一探這個橫跨中西的概念。     東西方的哲學思維傳承了不同的文化結晶,但現今的哲學訓練經常偏重其一而忽略了整體。­柏嘯虎教授認為處理當代社會與道德問題時,不論東西方哲學都有其實用之處。柏教授在傅­爾布萊特獎學金的支持下,於臺灣大學哲學研究所開設”美國實用主義”及”比較道德心理學”兩門課程分享他在比較哲學領域的心得。於訪談­中他也分享了他這一年於台灣生活的體驗。     柏嘯虎教授擅長人類行為研究,尤其專精於“毫不費力”或“無為”的探討。柏教授有深厚的比較哲學背景,尤其擅長於中國哲學領域。他還曾與創造力大師米哈里合作而涉足心理學,進而踏入認知科學領域,合著由麻省理工學院出版的“不費力的專注力–專注力與行動認知科學的新觀點(暫譯)”。

Yilin Sun: Building knowledge in a co-teaching setting

     Dr. Yilin Sun provided training and advice for the American English teachers in the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program 2011-12. In this video, she shares her experiences in the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) field. During her time in Taiwan, she developed a case study book to expand the resources for ETAs. The book summarized 30 scenarios that ETAs may encounter during their teaching in Taiwan. The case book is also an important milestone celebrating the 10th year of the Fulbright English co-teaching program in Taiwan. In addition to her work with the ETA program, Yilin also served as a Visiting Professor in the English Dept of National Taiwan Normal University. She gave seminars to faculty and students and also taught a graduate course. Back in the United States, Dr. Sun is a full time professor at South Seattle Community College. 英語協同教學的知識建構     孫以琳教授於2011-2012年獲得獎助來台提供”傅爾布萊特英語協同教學計劃”專­業的英語教學建議。訪台期間她不只分享了她擅長的TESOL教法(英語做為第二種語言­),並完成了”台灣英語協同教學案例 (Voices of Taiwan)”,內含30個實用的協同教學案例,供未來參與計畫的老師參考。這本書­的出版,也為進入到第十年的傅爾布萊特英語協同教學計畫提供了一個重要的里程碑。

Linda Alper: A midsummer night’s dream comes true

     Theatre actor and director Linda Alper taught English major students at Soochow University, culminating in a performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Under her guidance, the students, many of whom had no previous acting experience, created the production from the ground up. In this video Linda relates a breakthrough moment when she inspired her set designer to work creatively within their limited budget, which ultimately created an even dreamier atmosphere on stage. Linda also shares a few other experience and observations on Taiwan’s culture.     身為一個劇場導演和演員,梁妍教授帶領東吳大學英語系的學生從無到有完成了莎翁名劇 “仲夏夜之夢”。梁教授在此過程中激發了負責舞台設計學生的潛力,用有限的經費完成了一個如夢似幻的劇場設計。     梁教授也分享了她的傅爾布萊特經驗和對台灣文化的觀察。

Mary Stokrocki: Cultural exchange through digital arts

     Dr. Mary Stokrocki led her art students at Chaiyi University to explore the digital art world in Second Life. The students learned about artists and their works by curating virtual exhibitions. Her students showcased aspects of living in Taiwan, such as local flora and foods, through this digital medium. During her Fulbright grant, Dr. Stokrocki also learned about Taiwan’s agriculture, aboriginal culture, experiences which she has brought back to the US to enrich her teaching. Dr. Stokrocki is a Distinguished NAEA Professor of Art at Arizona State University.  透過數位藝術搭起文化交流的橋樑 司徒薇教授引領嘉義大學視覺藝術系暨研究所學生遨遊Second Life網路世界,並讓學生透過策展的練習,從數位世界了解藝術作品和藝術家。此外,她還透過此一平台搭起了跨校文化交流,讓台灣學生透過此一平台介紹台灣的美食、花卉與生活種種。在這次傅爾布萊特獎助的交流經驗中,司教授也深入體驗了台灣農業與原住民文化,並準備將這些文化學習帶回美國分享
